Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21
Dear Families,
Did you know that YouTube is used by more kids in the US than any other site or app? It is full of educational videos, exciting movie trailers, Minecraft “let’s play” reviews, vlogs, guides, funny memes, tutorials, fail montages, beloved cat and dog videos, and more!
It also contains videos that teach young people to hurt themselves, terrifying characters or animations that cause nightmares and sleeping problems, grooming and scamming through comments, harassment, and cyberbullying, vulgar and explicit language, inappropriate content with links to pornographic websites, and extreme violence. You name it – it’s been on YouTube.
YouTube Kids is made for younger audiences (usually under age 9). It’s typically safer but isn’t foolproof. Some of the horrific content listed above were found exclusively on YouTube Kids. If you have an elementary school child, please see Protect Young Eyes’ YouTube Kids App Review and discern which app best suits your family.
When I ask students what they like to do, they often mention watching YouTube. My 8-year-old grandson watches videos on YouTube. He has viewed the world’s tallest buildings, learned about physics and the elements of motion, listened to animated music, and watched some of his favorite animated shows. If my son let him, he would watch many more hours of YouTube than he is allowed. When I speak with students who are short on sleep and struggling to pay attention in school, I often hear that they have been on YouTube during the night when everyone else is sleeping. This is one of the reasons why it is so important to have technology in a place where it can be monitored day and night.
I highly recommend Protect Young Eyes to everyone looking for help navigating today’s tech world. My son told me about it several years ago, and it has been helping me understand the beauty and underside of technology ever since.
In Christ,

On Tuesday, October 1, our mighty Hawks Cross Country Team met at Lincoln Park in West Seattle to battle five other schools. Our team placed FIRST at the meet, and Tariq D. was #2 in the Top 5 fastest times for the boys. Well done Tariq, Layla, Keegan, Roman, Braydon, Sophia, Timothy, Wesley, Izzy, Jaylen, Miles, Zechariah, and Mariah!

OUR TEACHERS WILL BE IN SEASIDE, OREGON FOR THE LCMS NORTHWEST DISTRICT’S ALL-WORKERS CONFERENCE.

CCA parent and pastor Taeler Morgan has offered to lead a parent book club for this book! While Taeler and her husband have been committed to protecting their kids with mindful tech practices, they found this book was helpful in solidifying their comittment to delay smartphones and limit screen time.
Please email Sherrie Gibelyou if you are interested in this opportunity!
One of our CCA parents, Nicollette Roe, is hosting the Tacoma Children’s Business Fair, an event designed to inspire and empower young entrepreneurs. At this one-day event, children ages 5-16 have the opportunity to launch their business ventures for a day and get real-world experience being a CEO / Executive Director / Business Owner or Operator. This event is entirely youth led.
CCA fifth-grader Cora will be there launching her “Zero Waste Trace” nonprofit where she organizes neighborhood clean-ups and showcases what that work entails. She will teach shoppers at her booth how to keep the earth clean and allow them to purchase her services to organize a clean-up in their neighborhood for just the cost of supplies (garbage bags and a dump-run fee).
The Children’s Business Fair provides students the opportunity to create and showcase their own businesses, developing valuable entrepreneur skills, money-management skills, communication skills, and receiving a boost of confidence in the process!
The fair is scheduled for Saturday, November 16, at the Waterfront Market at Ruston, 12-3pm. Click the link or scan the QR code above for more info.
