Born in Tacoma, Rick returned to the Northwest in 2001 after many years living in California. He has been a teacher at Concordia Christian Academy since its opening in 2003 (then MRLHS.) With a diverse formal education ranging from aeronautical science to medieval studies, he teaches a variety of subjects and serves as the faculty sponsor for CCA’s chapter of the Junior Classical League in addition to his leadership position with the WA/BC Junior Classical League.


Rick is an avid biker and enjoys singing. He worships at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Lakewood.

Nate’s musical background is vast. A part of performance groups and an accomplished soloist from age 5, music has always been one of his greatest passions. Playing the trombone and singing in concert and jazz choir paved the way for state-level performances both vocally and instrumentally. In addition to his musical talents, Nate is also a master craftsman and professional AVL production technician. He and his wife, Cori, love to play music together while their toddler interpretive dances along!

Sue loves teaching grades 5-8; in fact, she is our resident middle school expert since coauthoring her book with Cynthia Tobias, Middle School, The Inside Story: What Kids Tell Us But Don’t Tell You. Sue and her husband Paul have raised four grown children, half of whom live in California. This gives her the opportunity to pursue her love for travel as she uses visiting them as an excuse to follow the sunshine. Her other interests include directing the choir at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Federal Way, reading several books at once, and speaking to parents and teachers across the country about middle schoolers.

Teaching is her second career; she served as an Assistant–Vice President for a local bank before resigning to raise children. Mrs. Shannon and her husband have four children and are grateful for acting as guardians for many international students who call them “Mom” and “Dad” as well.

During the last 12 years, Joel developed and directed the Exercise & Sport Science program at CU-Portland before relocating to the Tacoma area. Joel is a Vicar (pastor in training) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (right across the street from CCA). He enjoys bicycling, swimming, and gardening.

Nathan comes to Concordia Christian Academy with 10 years of educational experience. Last year, Nathan split time between substitute teaching for his previous school, completing coursework for a masters degree, and beginning a principal internship with Concordia. He will complete his master’s work next year when he returns to his internship fulltime. Nathan is married to Julie, an alumna of Concordia Lutheran School and Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School (now CCA). During the pandemic, the Carnahans adopted a dog named Marra. This summer, along with buying their first home, the Carnahans have been preparing to become parents expecting their first child in December 2022!

Samantha grew up in Chicago and relocated to Tacoma in 2020. She was a college athlete and interned for the Department of Advancement at RMU while earning her degree in Business Administration. She is a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in North Tacoma, where she serves as a Sunday School teacher. She enjoys walking her dog, Ruby, with her husband, Daniel, and attending live sporting events.

Terri has served as Concordia’s librarian since 2002. She loves to volunteer! Before hiring into her current position, she volunteered her time on many different committees at CCA. She was also previously a leader of two Girl Scout Troops and one Cub Scout Troop all at the same time! Terri spent ten years of her childhood in Panama, and her interests are photography, scrapbooking, and any kind of travel (mostly cruising). She is a member of St. Luke’s Church in Federal Way and is blessed with a wonderful husband, three children, and two grandchildren.

Previously, she served as a Social Worker in multiple nursing homes following her graduation from Concordia University. Kathy and her husband, Mike, are parents to their son, Logan, who currently attends CCA. When Kathy is not at school, she and her husband help with Sunday School at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Kathy loves music, singing in choirs or ensembles, and playing handbells. She enjoys helping and sharing her Lord and Savior, Jesus, with others.

Before stepping into education, Käri was the Assistant Service Manager at a local Toyota dealership before she became a fulltime mom. In her free time, she enjoys camping, bike riding and spending time with her husband and boys. They are all members of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Tammy has always had a love for children and studied childhood development as far back as when she was in 4H. Tammy previously worked as a teacher’s assistant at Little Lambs Preschool on the campus of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she holds a position on the preschool’s board. Additionally, she volunteers as Chair for the Board of Education at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. After a few years of volunteering at Concordia Christian Academy, Tammy joined the team as Educational Assistant. She loves spending time with her husband and two kids who both attend CCA. She enjoys scrapbooking, crafts of all kinds, camping, archery, and many other outdoor activities.
