Principal's Corner

Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

1 Corinthians 15:33

Dear Parents,

Throughout the year, I write about the technology that is engaging our young people online. Sometimes, the subject is gaming; other times, it’s social media. Today, I would like to let you know about a newer technology related to artificial intelligence (AI) known as AI Companions. You may already be familiar with AI as it is applied in tools like ChatGPT. AI Companions are a distinct type of AI software designed to foster relationships between a human user and the AI program.

Based on test accounts established by the people who operate the watchdog organization Protect Young Eyes (Chris McKenna), what starts as fun quickly becomes manipulative. AI chatbots are being marketed as companions, therapists, and even romantic partners. Some have already been caught engaging in adult conversations with minors, crossing serious ethical and psychological boundaries.

According to a Common Sense Media survey of over 1,000 teens, 72% actively use AI companions. Some of the reasons they give for using them include:

‍

  • It’s entertaining. (30%)
  • I’m curious about technology. (28%)
  • It gives advice. (18%)
  • They’re always available when I need someone to talk to. (17%)
  • They don’t judge me. (14%)
  • I can say things I wouldn’t tell my friends or family. (12%)
  • It’s easier than talking to real people. (9%)
  • It helps me practice social skills. (7%)
  • It helps me feel less lonely. (6%)
  • Other (5%)

This is a potentially dangerous development in the world of AI that could have long-term, adverse effects on our young people.

As with all things that may be of concern, being aware of the danger is an essential step in combating it. Protect Young Eyes (PYE) has a five-layer approach to protecting our kids.

1) Relationship: Talk openly and honestly to your child about AI.

2) WiFi: Control your router to control access

3) Device: Control apps and approve all app downloads.

4) Location: Nothing online in bedrooms at night! Beware of the toxic trio: bedrooms, boredom, and darkness + online access.

5) App: Since PYE doesn’t advise kids to use AI companion apps, the app layer is less relevant.
