Principal's Corner

Ephesians 5: 15

Dear Parents,

Earlier this year, I talked about the fascinating information in Jonathan Haidt’s book, The Anxious Generation. Dr. Haidt has a blog (After Babel), and this week’s post caught my eye: “30 Facts About Childhood Today That Will Terrify You” is a must-read for anyone raising kids. This post was originally posted by Ted Gioia, a writer, musician, and culture critic, on his substack The Honest Broker.

Those of us who have been in education for decades see daily the effects of too much technology. Of particular interest to me are the stats addressing adolescent mental health and basic school skills.

More students now struggle with motivation, follow-through, writing skills, and mental math. Research indicates the core problem is too much tech use, where everything is at your fingertips. Forget a math fact or important date? Just look it up! Want a paper done in the blink of an eye? Ask AI. Feeling lonely or bored? Find a Chatbot. Even more disturbing is the number of young people who have been exposed to porn through benign searches or gaming online.

Another aspect of too much phone use is a lack of grammar, sentence structure, and spelling in student writing. We teach proper usage, but there’s a different language in texts  that bleeds into student work (“c u soon lol”).

While we use tech for resources and curriculum at CCA, we have begun to pull back on student use and will continue to refine how we engage students in learning. Tech is convenient and useful, but the dangers are real, and it’s worth reconsidering how much exposure our young people are allowed.

In Christ,
