Principal's Corner

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Matthew 5: 9

Dear Parents,

Tomorrow we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The holiday also happens to fall this year on Inauguration Day. I encourage students to participate in both celebrations.

Dr. King was an extraordinary leader who fought for equality in peaceful ways. He was powerful not just in word, but in action. At a time when it would have been easy to gather the masses to lead change with violence, Dr. King inspired people to pray, to think, to make change through peaceful protest – to be the change they wanted to see in the world. We have a federal holiday in his name because of the way he led. Others have made a difference, but no one has accomplished the mission in quite the same way as Dr. King. We mourn because his life was cut short, but his death did not stop the impact he had on our country and humanity. Though we continue to fight for true equality in our country, the power of Dr. King’s words live on. During our chapel service on Wednesday, our students will hear a few minutes of a sermon Dr. King gave at a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama in 1957. It is a powerful message about how God calls us to love all people. We may not like everyone, but God’s call is to love. One of the best ways to demonstrate love is to serve others. This is a message we emphasize at CCA, and I believe there is no greater gift of love than to serve. I encourage all of us to find ways to serve tomorrow and in the days ahead.

Tomorrow’s presidential inauguration is only the third to fall on the same day as MLK Day. It won’t happen again until 2053! Regardless of political views, I believe this is a great tradition that should be viewed, because it reminds us that we are part of the greatest country on earth. We are privileged to watch with Americans all over the country who want to take part in celebrating our nation’s rich history and the transfer of presidential power. Your students have a front-row seat to this ceremony in their own living rooms on their day off. Encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity!

As I was visiting classrooms last week, I noticed a particularly great bulletin board in third grade commemorating Dr. King and others who have made a difference throughout history. Check it out below.
