CCA Bulletin 1.18.26

Principal's Corner

But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Amos 5:24

Dear Parents,

Tomorrow we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Dr. King was an extraordinary leader who fought for equality in peaceful ways. He was powerful not just in word, but in action. At a time when it would have been easy to gather the masses to lead change with violence, Dr. King inspired people to pray, to think, to make change through peaceful protest – to be the change they wanted to see in the world. We have a federal holiday in his name because of the way he led. Others have made a difference, but no one has accomplished the mission in quite the same way as Dr. King. We mourn because his life was cut short, but his death did not stop the impact he had on our country and humanity. Though we continue to fight for true equality in our country, the power of Dr. King’s words live on.

During our all-school chapel service this week on Wednesday, some of our high school journalism students have selected and will read powerful quotes from the man who continues to have a meaningful legacy today. Our students will see images of Dr. King and his ministry. Additionally, we are honored to have one of our own CCA family, Cheryl Byrd, come to lead us in “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Cheryl is an early childhood educator and mentor. She is grandmother to kindergartner, Josiah, and her family has its own powerful legacy of civil rights activism.

Pastor Matthew Warmbier (The Lutheran Church of St. Paul in Graham) will be giving our message.

We invite you to be part of our chapel celebration on Wednesday, beginning at 8:40, across the street at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

In Christ,

The Lutheran Lens

A new monthly addition to our bulletin written by Pastor Sam Schuldheisz from Beautiful Savior, Milton.

What is a Lutheran?

Whether you’re new to Concordia Christian Academy or you’ve been around the school a few years, you’ve probably heard the word “Lutheran” more than a few times. There are good reasons for this. CCA is a Lutheran School. We’re part of a church body known as the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Our students walk across the street to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. And there’s that word again: Lutheran. But what does it mean? What’s a Lutheran anyway? Is it some kind of potluck-loving cult? Some strange, secret club with a secret handshake? No and no.

Back in the day. No, not the 1900s. Even further back. In the 16th century, there lived a man named Martin Luther. He was a priest. Professor. Pastor. He wanted to reform the Roman Catholic church, but was excommunicated for teaching exactly what the Scriptures teach. That people are saved not by good deed, feelings, or their brain power, but by grace through faith in Jesus crucified and risen for sinners.

Eventually, Christians following Luther’s biblical teaching gathered in churches and called themselves, much to Luther’s chagrin, Lutherans. He preferred the name, evangelicals, that is, people of the Gospel. As long as Christians focus on the Gospel, Luther said ok, and the name stuck. Over 500 years later, you’ll find Lutherans worldwide.

So, what’s a Lutheran? It’s another way of saying, “I’m a baptized, sinner-saint, saved by the blood of Jesus.” To be a Lutheran is to believe, teach, and confess that Christ died for sinners, and you (and me) qualify. The name Lutheran means that as a church, school, and people, we are Christ-centered and cross-focused.

Stay tuned to next month’s edition of “The Lutheran Lens” where you’ll find out more about two more favorite bible words from Lutherans, Law and Gospel.

Until then, rest in the imputed righteousness of Jesus.
