Principal's Corner

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6

Dear Parents,

L.E.S.T. is coming! In just one month, we will co-host this long-standing 5th-8th grade tournament with PLU. L.E.S.T. stands for the Lutheran Elementary School Tournament, which is attended by approximately 20 Lutheran schools from all over the Northwest and Northern California.

Originally a basketball tournament, L.E.S.T. was formerly hosted by Concordia University in Portland from 1962-2020. Now held at PLU  in Tacoma, this unique tournament includes 15 individual or team events in sports, academics, music, drama, technology, robotics, dance, and art.

L.E.S.T. takes place during the President’s Day weekend (February 15-17). Students are not required to participate, but most of our middle school students and families are involved. This is an opportunity for everyone to support each other as we represent Concordia Christian Academy. I have a few decades of memories as an L.E.S.T. parent and coach, and I can say firsthand that this is an amazing experience.

I have included below a schedule of volunteers needed for this event. If you are the parent of a younger student, this is a great way to see parts of the tournament up close, before your student is old enough to compete. If you will be at the tournament to support your student, you may still be able to help out in some way. Please take a look and contact Libby Glasser if you can lend some time.

We appreciate your consideration as we look forward to this great event!

Re-enrollment is HERE!

Links were sent to all families eligible for re-enrollment. Your link should be used this month to apply for re-enrollment and receive a $100 credit toward re-enrollment fees.

Don’t delay. The credit only extends through the end of January. After that, enrollment opens up to new families, and space is limited!

The CCA Hawk-tion is Coming!

Do you own a business? Would you like to make a donation, sponsor a table, or offer services?

Do you have new, unused items (boxed or unboxed) that you would like to donate?

Do you own a vacation rental or timeshare that you could offer up for the good of the cause?

The Hawk-tion is our #1 fundraiser of the year. It generates money that assists Concordia in many ways and is always a fun time! This year’s Make a Difference will focus on a complete facelift for our very busy gymnasium (more details to come). Let’s make this auction the best yet!

If you would like to donate or help in any way, please contact Samantha Hanson.

The latest news from Protect Young Eyes (Mrs. Gibelyou’s favorite way to stay on top of potentially dangerous tech trends):

  • AI – the next “misinformation superspreader.” According to Newsguard, websites that host fake articles written by AI have increased by 1,000%, “…generating hundreds, if not thousands, of articles a day.” Combined with fake social media accounts and deepfake technology, it feels like we’ve unleashed a force that is already beyond control.
  • 95% of teens aged 13-17 watch YouTube, and 1/5 watch “almost constantly.” New Pew Research shares great insights on where teens spend their time online. Here’s our Ultimate Guide to YouTube!
  • Over 1,000 images of CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) were found in an AI training database. This is a terrifying discovery. The AI platforms trained with this data would be “…able to produce content of child exploitation that could resemble real-life child exploitation.
  • The TEMU shopping app has been #1 in app stores for months, is rated 4+, but contains highly sexualized goods with no controls. Please control all app downloads! (AppleAndroid)
  • Judge allows Snapchat to be sued for reckless features. Parents of teens who died from drugs obtained through Snapchat are celebrating a breakthrough legal victory.
  • Twitch allowed “artistic nudity” for two days. Twitch, owned by Amazon, is a massively popular live-streaming app for gamers. After adults exploited the rule, they realized it was a mistake and rolled it back. Our updated Twitch App Review explains everything parents need to know.
